Lucy Liu has opened up about her choice to become a single mother at the age of 40.
The actor, 54, has been promoting his latest project, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, in which she plays the daughter of the God Atlas, alongside her “sisters” Helen Mirren, 77, and Rachel Zegler, 21. The film opened on Friday, March 17.
In an interview with The Cut magazine, the action star revealed that when she decided to have her son Rockwell, who was born in 2015 via surrogate, she just went for it.
“I didn’t have a plan,” he told the outlet.
– I just thought that I didn’t want to talk about the next project. It was like I was reading the same script. I got tired of it. I didn’t want the same dialogue. I had heard myself say the same things many, many times and just thought, “Well this can’t be the next one.” It wasn’t enough,” he said.

Lucy, who is fluent in Mandarin as well as Italian and Spanish, admitted that she didn’t think about the decision or do any research on the subject.
‘I just pulled the trigger. I can think myself of something easily; if I think too much, I won’t do it.’
“It’s better for me to feel something and go for it. A lot of people read books about parenting. I didn’t do any of that. I was like, ‘Once the kid’s here, I’m just going to figure it out.’
The actress was sure that she wanted to raise her son in her native New York.
“I definitely wanted to raise a child in New York. People say, ‘It’s not convenient, you don’t even have a car,’ but this way they see everything,” she insisted.
“You show them what’s safe and what’s not, and they figure it out through experience. It’s hard to build common sense when you’re in the car all the time. They’re going to smell smells.
The Critics Choice Television Awards winner said he takes the subway to navigate the Big Apple, but is more cautious about the experience amid an increase in anti-Asian crimes during the pandemic.
– Now there must be a very different level of caution. It’s real, and if you don’t recognize it, you’re being ridiculous,” he said.

“I take my son on the subway all the time,” the Strange World star admitted.
‘If I don’t feel comfortable, I walk out. I don’t need to sit somewhere to be polite. In that sense, I am a person of action. I have to trust my instincts. Just being aware helps me, but I don’t want to live in fear. I’m not going to take any chances in my life. I’m just not stupid about it.
Lucy has spread her artistic wings as a painter and now has an exhibition going on at the Studio School in New York called “Lucy Liu: What Was”.

The artist shared a video on Instagram, writing, “Sharing this art exhibit with my son has been the highlight of the year!”
“I love how kids see everything from all angles,” she continued. “She’s opened up my world so much – I’m grateful to be a mom and a reminder of what it’s like to be a kid again.”
